Download & Create Your Account
Download Relay-9 from the App Store or Google Play. Open the app and create your coach account with an email and password. You can also enable biometric login (Face ID / fingerprint) from Settings for faster access on game day.
Build Your Roster & Pitch Arsenal
Navigate to Settings and set up your team data:
- • Manage Pitchers: Add each pitcher on your staff.
- • Manage Opponents: Add opponent team names for your schedule.
- • Manage Pitch Types: Customize your pitch arsenal (Fastball, Curveball, Changeup, etc.).
- • Manage Catcher Cues: Add optional catcher cues (e.g., "Set up inside", "Elevated").
Pair Your Bluetooth Earbuds (Pro & Pro Plus)
Relay-9 uses your phone's text-to-speech engine to deliver pitch calls through any standard Bluetooth earbuds. Here's how to set up:
- Close Relay-9 completely before pairing.
- Go to your phone's Bluetooth settings and pair your earbuds (AirPods, Galaxy Buds, Beats, JBL, etc.).
- Make sure the earbuds are connected for Media Audio.
- Open Relay-9, start a session, and tap Relay to verify the audio plays through the earbuds.
💡 Tip: For in game use, have your catcher wear a single earbud under their helmet on the ear opposite of your dugout. If your dugout is on the first base side, have your catcher wear the earbud in their right ear so they can still hear the dugout if needed.
Set Up Smartwatch Notifications (Pro Plus)
For Pro Plus subscribers, Relay-9 can send visual pitch notifications directly to any paired smartwatch. For Amazfit watches (like the Amazfit Band 7) using the Zepp app, follow these critical configuration steps:
Zepp App Notification Settings:
✅ Turn OFF "Notify only when phone locked"
This ensures notifications are sent to the watch at all times, even when the coach is actively using the phone to call pitches.
✅ Turn OFF "Receive incoming SMS"
Prevents text message distractions from cluttering the watch screen during a game.
✅ Enable "Receive notifications from only Relay-9"
In the Zepp app, go to the app notification list and enable only Relay-9. This ensures the watch screen shows only pitch calls and nothing else.
Watch Display & Brightness Settings:
🔆 Turn brightness ALL the way up
In the watch's Display & Brightness settings, maximize the brightness so the pitch call is easily readable in bright outdoor sunlight.
📱 Enable "Screen on upon notification"
This makes the watch screen automatically light up when a pitch call arrives — no button press needed. The player simply glances at their wrist.
⚠️ Important iOS Note: On iPhones, the Relay-9 app will not appear in the Zepp app's "Receive notifications from apps" list until after Relay-9 has attempted to send its first notification. To resolve this:
- Open Relay-9, start a session, and tap Relay to send a test pitch.
- Then open the Zepp app → Notifications → Receive notifications from apps.
- Relay-9 should now appear in the list — toggle it ON.
Enable Watch Notifications in Relay-9
Once your watch is paired and configured, go to Settings → Watch & Notifications inside the Relay-9 app and toggle "Enable Watch Notifications" to ON. This tells Relay-9 to broadcast pitch calls as system notifications that your smartwatch will mirror.
Game Day Workflow
When it's game time, here's your flow:
- Start a Session: Select your pitcher and the opponent, then tap "Start Session."
- Select Pitch Type: Tap the dropdown and choose the pitch (Fastball, Curve, etc.).
- Select Location: Tap the zone on the 9-point strike zone grid (or use Simple View for Inside/Middle/Outside).
- Add Catcher Cue (Optional): Select a cue if desired.
- Tap Relay: The pitch call is instantly sent via Bluetooth audio to earbuds AND as a visual notification to smartwatches.
- Log Outcome: If pitch tracking is enabled, log the result (Ball, Strike, Foul, Hit, Out, HBP). The count updates automatically.
- Resend / Undo: Tap "Resend" to re-transmit a pitch. Tap "Undo" to correct a mislogged result.
- End Session: Tap "End" to save the session data. You can export any session as a CSV file from the History tab.
